Local governments cutting hours over Obamacare costs

Post  fshnski on Fri Aug 23, 2013 9:15 am

This is the Washington Post, not Fox.

Many cash-strapped cities and counties facing the prospect of shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars in new health-care costs under the Affordable Care Act are opting instead to reduce the number of hours their part-time employees work.

obamacare-300x199_image_982wThe decisions to cut employee hours come 16 months before employers — including state and local governments — will be required to offer health care coverage to employees who work at least 30 hours a week. Some local officials said the cuts are happening now either because of labor contracts that must be negotiated in advance, or because the local governments worry that employees who work at least 30 hours in the months leading up to the January 2015 implementation date would need to be included in their health-care plans.

On Tuesday, Middletown Township, New Jersey said it would reduce the hours of 25 part-time workers in order to avoid up to $775,000 in increased annual health-care costs. Earlier this month, Bee County, Tex., said it would limit its part-time workers to 24 hours per week when the new fiscal year starts on Oct. 1.

Last month, department heads in Brevard County, Fla., were told to plan similar cuts in advance of the 2015 deadline. Brevard County Insurance Director Jerry Visco estimated the new mandate would cost the county $10,000 per part-time employee — or $1.38 million a year if all 138 part-time employees who work more than 30 hours a week are covered, he told Florida Today. The Brevard County libraries have already cut hours for 37 employees.

“It’s not something we prefer to do, but the cost of health insurance is significant and would really impact municipal budgets,” said Anthony Mercantante, Middletown’s township administrator. “It’s not something we can take on, particularly when we don’t know some of the other ramifications of the Affordable Care Act. There are far more questions than answers right now.”

If I read the article correctly, the employees were part timers without health insurance to begin with, so the local governments are trying to get them under that 30 hour threshold under Obamacare. One simple solution would be to raise the 30 hour threshold to avoid this problem, but we don't have a functioning Republican party these days, hence the local governments have to be careful. How many part timers out there work 35 hours a week? And if so they need to be brought down to 29 hours. There is no mountain with this mole hill. Obamacare is here to stay! As soon as the extremist Republicans get that through their thick skulls, the better off we'll all be!

Republicans in Congress need to have the courage to stop funding Obamacare. Obamacare is a disaster. Eighty percent of Americans want it removed or replaced. Some of us saw this coming long before it was passed.

Socialist health care plans always end up rationing care, slowing innovation, and costing way more than alternatives both in dollars and quality of care.

Obama is threatening to shut down the government next month if Obamacare funding is not included in the continuing resolution. Republicans and Democrats need to stop fearing Obama and they need to hold onto the separation of powers. They need to fear us not him.

The Federal Government “shuts down” every holiday and every weekend. Any shutdown will have no impact on our military and other areas of national security, Social Security, Medicare and other essential governmental operations. A “shutdown” of our government would show objective thinkers how unnecessary most of our government really is.

Leftist hope that if they can continue to ignore the facts long enough and shout racist enough times that people will continue to be distracted by the Emperor's New Clothes. Obama is like a rowboat missing its oars; he’ll just drift along and go where the political winds blow and the weak minded just follow.

Outer, I was just going to say, I am always glad when Congress goes home so nothing can happen. A shutdown would not bother me at all! Good idea. We might eventually find that we could actually live without the gov-at least a lot of it. How bad has the sequester been? You would have thought it was the end of the world and I haven't heard too much about it.

Both Parties Threaten Government Shutdown, Because It Worked Great Last Time

Post  fshnski on Fri Aug 23, 2013 2:03 pm

Democratic strategist Steve Elmendorf has revealed that Democrats are equally willing to shut down the government in order to achieve political motives. He argues that “If we just let [sequestration] keep happening without having a confrontation about it we're losing. And Sept. 30 becomes a place to have a confrontation about it."

Listen to Gingrich...

News that the United States is considering a military strike on Syria in response to the Bashar al-Assad regime's suspected use of chemical weapons suggests we could soon see an American bombing campaign on the war-torn country. The atrocities that took place in Syria recently, such as those that have been taking place there for almost two years, are deplorable and inhuman. Before bombing Syria over the regime's latest crimes, however, we should stand back and ask, "And then what?"....

Stay out
.
Gee,
Ya think?
