What do you think?
Fifty-one days after the D.C. Council passed legislation that would require some large retailers to pay a higher minimum wage, the bill has reached the mayor’s desk for either approval or veto.
The Large Retailer Accountability Act was transmitted to Mayor Vincent C. Gray on Friday afternoon, but officials don’t expect a decision on the legislation until at least the beginning of next week after the Labor Day holiday weekend.

“Attorneys and staff will take a look at the bill on Tuesday,” said Mr. Gray’s spokesman Pedro Ribeiro.
Passed by an 8-5 vote on July 10, the legislation would force retailers occupying in excess of 75,000 square feet or parent companies that gross $1 billion or more to pay their employees a minimum of $12.50 an hour in wages and benefits. The current rate is $8.25. It exempts companies with a unionized workforce.
While Mr. Gray has been questioned about his intention on the bill regularly at press events, he has not given any indication whether he will approve or veto the bill.
Tensions are high over the bill’s fate as Wal-Mart informed D.C officials that it would not build three of six proposed stores in the District and that plans for the remaining three stores could be jeopardized if the legislation becomes law.

Good. Hopefully Walmart has enough pull to fight them. Why don't people understand that as wages go up so does the cost of living and it is all RELATIVE????? It makes NO difference.

Costco pays their people well and remains a competitive retailer with good prices. I understand that Market Basket, here in NH, also takes care of their employees, with reasonable prices. If they can do it, any employer can. The Republicans will always fight a hike in the minimum wage, and always complain about the low paid employees being on food stamps as well. That's because they represent big business, not ordinary Americans!

Very true, and just another reason why there will never be another republican President.News Buzzard wrote:Costco pays their people well and remains a competitive retailer with good prices. Re: What do you think?
The Republican party is in shambles! Their only strategy is to say no to everything and blame Obama for their own mistakes. They can't even recognize an improving economy because it will reflect well on the president in the face of their fierce obstruction. They know Romney got 59%of the white vote and lost the election, and yet they can't start any significant outreach to the minorities. You're right, it will be many years before there is a Republican incumbent in the White House again. We can never say never, because once this generation of goons in the Republican party passes on, there may be a more reasonable generation behind them!!Donzel wrote:Very true, and just another reason why there will never be another republican President.

BS stands for bullshit, but I guess it's OK for you to use vulgar language and be nasty.fshnski wrote:What a bunch of BS. Why don't you go tell that to some one who will believe you.
Costco cashiers at top pay make $21 an hour and have the best health insurance in the retail industry. Entry level managers start at $52 thousand a year, and mid level managers start at $62 thousand. I shopped at Costco for years and their prices were always very reasonable:

Re: What do you think?
Funny you may be right about Market BAsket but if so it is just the opposite of what I just heard yesterday. They opened a new MB in Biddeford, Maine, the first in Maine and I heard that everybody is on a part time basis. I don't know if it is true, just what I heard. Funny you should mention what you did.News Buzzard wrote:Costco pays their people well and remains a competitive retailer with good prices. Re: What do you think?
Why do the Market Basket employees like their CEO so much if he has been mistreating them? It appears they enjoy a profit sharing plan that they're afraid they'll lose if their current CEO is removed.

I heard about that with Art. I have no idea. Maybe they want to work part time? Did you know Arthur has a place on Tuftonboro Neck?

Re: What do you think?
I think a movie should be made about the Demoulas family feud.
It could be named: T vs S Demoulas. They would have to find two Greek actors that looked like these two:
T. is on the left and S. is on the right

You might not see a listing but he is there. He bought what used to be Pick Point Lodges. Come to think of it, I did talk to him on the phone so he does have a phone there.

No, that is what Arthur has- the main lodge. I think he also still has two of the cottages. Corky has his house for sale though. I think that is all Corky kept was his own fairly new house.
