GILFORD, N.H. —A Gilford police officer used his cruiser to push a burning car away from the gas pumps at a local gas station early Monday morning.

Officer Kevin Baron said he was on routine patrol when he heard a call for a car that had smoke coming from under the hood at the Gilford Mobile Mart.

Baron said he was less than a mile away and drove to the gas station, where he saw a 1991 Lexus smoldering at one of the pumps.

He said he noticed smoke coming from under the hood and flames coming from under the wheel wells.

Baron said he used the push bar on the front of his cruiser to move the burning car away from the gas pumps and into a nearby parking lot. Baron then got the fire extinguisher from the trunk of his car and tried to put out the flames.

The Gilford Fire Department arrived moments later and put out the fire.

There were no injuries, but the car was considered a total loss.

Baron said he just acted on instinct and wanted to get the car away from the pumps.
