Did you happen so see the cafe slip that added .35 I think it was to the meal to cover the new minimum wage? Do people think that as min. wage goes up prices don't go up. One way or another they do so go ahead raise the min wage to a hundred and hour and see if you are any better off . People are so stupid, they just don't think.

I would imagine many businesses are paying more than the value of what a minimum wage would be set at anyway. Look at Market Basket and Costco; they pay a decent wage, provide benefits and charge a reasonable price for their product. I hear Starbucks is very progressive that way also. Companies can be successful and take care of their employees at the same time, and then you have companies with a terrible reputation, like Walmart!

It's not worth the bad public relations for a restaurant to post a 35 cent minimum wage surplus, and besides, what's the big deal about an additional 35 cents on a bill that may cost 60 bucks? If it only costs a restaurant 35 cents a bill to raise the minimum wage, then why not do it and foster a good relationship with your employees? They can steal more than 35 cents a bill from you if you're a jerk!!!

What the scorched-earth people don't understand is that the $.35 goes right back into the economy and creates more demand for goods...aw the circle/cycle of healthy economics, what a miracle!!

That's right! More income=more spending. That's a fact which has been demonstrated over and over again. One of the places with the highest minimum wage is Seattle, and they have a 4% unemployment rate!!

I don't know how many businesses actually pay minimum wage.

The .35 goes right back into the economy but it came out of the pocket of the person who just got a .35 raise because minimum wage just went out. So raising the min. wage didn't do a thing. Can't you see that? If you can't, I give up on both of you.

The person who gets the raise spends more money. That's been a proven scenario, over and over.

I agree, but giving employees more money makes the cost of business go up so the person gets a raise but also has to pay more for what he wants/needs/.

Why can some companies take care of their employees and have reasonable prices, like Market Basket? Why is it that the city of Seattle has the highest minimum wage in the country, and yet only has a 4% unemployment rate? That all flies in the face of your argument! I'm thinking this is all a moot point anyway, because most outfits probably pay more than minimum wage.

Because Seattle is Boeing—and Boeing employees dine out because they can afford it?

Seattle just enacted their 15 dollar wage- we have no idea what the impact will be!

The State of Washington already had the highest minimum wage in the country prior to Seattle going to $15.

Seattle is so much more than Boeing! Microsoft, Costco and Amazon all have a large presence out there, not to mention the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They thrive on tourism, shipping and have 2 professional sports teams. Washington is not exactly the lowest taxed state either.

The Minnesota Governor said, “This minimum wage is intended to be covered by [b]the employer
—not the consumer”.

What a dope...

Or 60¢?

Think of the minimum wage increase to the lowliest dishwasher.

The concept was to let the consumer know why restaurant prices were increasing.

You'd not be saving any money elsewhere. So your "principle" is what?

Why?? Because they broke it down for all to see instead of imbedding it in the price of the food where you don't see it? Do you think a business can keep paying employees more without adding it in to the price of what they sell?

Exactly, NH. Every business has got to raise their prices if they are forced to pay their employees more. Everybody works on a margin and if you don't meet that your business is done. Why can't you understand that, NB?

I am interested in seeing restaurant employees making a decent living, rather than relying on food stamps to survive, and I'm willing to pay for it. I am not interested in a restaurant politicizing it. I spend a lot of money in restaurants and there are plenty of places to eat. It's nice to see all of the restaurants doing well this year, and that bodes well for tax receipts with the rooms and meals tax.

So as long as they hide the cost increases in the price you are ok with that. If they put it right out there for you, you won't go to that restaurant?

That's right. I don't want politics involved with it, and there are plenty of places who are willing to feed us at a reasonable price. It turns out that our favorite restaurant is nowhere near Wolfeboro, and that's a shame, but we're also willing to spend the money to travel to our favorite restaurant. A good restaurant can do thousands of dollars in a day, so I don't think they would have to charge too much more money to raise the minimum wage for their workers. How much more overhead would that be relative to what they have coming in?

It's quite obvious from looking at the restaurants and lodging establishments that the economy is getting better, but nobody here on the Forum of Gloom will admit that. God forbid you give Obama any credit for anything! That's alright. I know he has done a great job, and so will Hillary!!

I think going up to 10$ and hour for waiters would make a huge dent in a restaurant, many of whom I imagine are already struggling. I agree, Wolfeboro's restaurants are more expensive but you don't need to spend money on gas to go out of town and maybe if people like you would stay in town, they would have more business and could afford to lower their prices and still stay in business. I know though, it is a which comes first, the chicken or the egg. Do they lower prices first to get more local people or do local people spend their money in town so the restaurant can have more business and therefore drop their prices? I am afraid neither is going to happen.

I wonder what would happen if restaurants gave servers a flat $15 an hour and did not permit them to accept gratuities? I'm a good tipper and usually go up to 25%. Don't get me wrong, we spend a lot of money in Wolfeboro and have been to East of Suez no less than 8 times this summer, but our favorite restaurant is not in Wolfeboro.
