One shooter dead, hunt on for two more after 4 victims killed, 8 injured in Navy Yard rampage

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said one shooter was confirmed killed at the scene of the Navy Yard rampage and authorities are looking for two other men who may also have been involved in the attack.

The two at large suspects were dressed in military garb but are not believed to be U.S. service personnel, Lanier said.

One was a young white man in a khaki like uniform and the other was a black man in his 50s with a long rifle in an olive colored garb, she said.

Lanier said there were multiple fatalities at the scene but exact numbers were not immediately.

A Navy spokesman says four have been killed, eight wounded in shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

At least six killed in Navy Yard shooting; police seek 2 more potential gunmen

Post  fshnski on Mon Sep 16, 2013 12:48 pm

At least one gunman opened fire inside a building at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday morning, and officials said six people were killed and at least four were wounded, including a law enforcement officer.

Police were looking for two other potential gunmen wearing military-style uniforms, including one who had on a beret, chief Cathy Lanier said. One had a long gun and the other was also armed, she said. One of the three gunmen had died, though Lanier didn't say how.

Witnesses described a gunman opening fire from the fourth floor, aiming down on people in the first-floor cafeteria. Others said a gunman fired at them in a third-floor hallway. It wasn't clear whether the witnesses on different floors were describing the same gunman.

As witnesses emerged from the building, a helicopter hovered over it, schools were on lockdown and airplanes at nearby Reagan National Airport were briefly grounded so they wouldn't interfere with law enforcement helicopters. Less than 2 miles away, security was beefed up at the Capitol, but officials said there was no known threat there. President Barack Obama was getting frequent briefings on the shooting.

Two Navy officials confirmed at least six people had died. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the situation publicly.

"...One U.S. official has been quoted as saying Aaron Alexis was kicked out of the Navy in 2011 for ‘misconduct’ as a direct result of his gun arrest three years ago..."
The party has been cancelled, but Obama is being brought up-to-date by his caddie.

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray said he wondered if budget cuts had something to do with a gunman getting onto the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, killing 12 before being killed himself.
“As I look at sequestration, which is about saving money in the federal government being spent, have we somehow skimped?” Mr. Gray said on CNN’s “New Day” on Tuesday morning.
