MANCHESTER — The Common Core state standards have been dropped in the lap of the full school board.

The board's Curriculum and Instruction Committee voted Tuesday to send the matter to the full board without a recommendation, after several dozen people spoke against the standards and some school board members echoed some of their concerns.

Approximately 50 people turned out for Tuesday's meeting. Many of them reiterated objections to the Common Core standards that have been forcefully made at several school board meetings in recent weeks.

The committee has been asked to sign off on curriculum guides developed over the summer by city teachers in order to align teaching in the district with Common Core. District officials have said that Manchester is well behind other districts in adopting the standards; state education officials have indicated that state and federal aid could be jeopardized if the district does not agree to institute the assessment test derived from the standards.

Critics charge Common Core is an attempt by the Obama administration to impose a rigid educational system that relies on unsound principles and undermines local control. Supporters say its goal is to establish nationwide learning benchmarks and to make U.S. students prepared to compete in the global economy.
Richard Dumont, who served on the school board in the 1990s, said Common Core reminded him of earlier, ill-conceived proposals to revamp the curriculum.
"I can't for the life of me understand why the board would want to implement a massive rewrite on how we teach our kids," he said.

Another critic, Siobhan Tautkus, implored the board, to "ask one question — what does the federal government do well?"

I'm not sure. I think Common Core could cause a few problems. Number one is the possibility they will just teach to the test. The path to the test is then very narrow. You could say that time and brain space isn't "wasted on unnecessary" information.

The second is the difference in teaching  environments. Not every kid can be taught the same way. To grade a teachers success or failure on a static test is unfair. Teachers just don't teach the three Rs. They are helping to mold these young minds, each one different from the one before.

Why is the topic called "Feds to control our children"?

"The CCSS are not a national or state curriculum nor are they federally mandated. Standards do not tell teachers how to teach, but provide a kindergarten through 12th grade roadmap for what students should know and be able to demonstrate. It remains up to each local school district to design curriculum to help their students successfully achieve the standards. The CCSS are evidenced based, aligned with college and work expectations, and are informed by the highest standards across the country and globe. These standards were designed by a diverse group of educators, business leaders, and advocacy and policy stakeholders and have garnered support from state and national parent organizations."

Thank you that is a good answer and also the truth.

I was hoping that the author of this thread might have known...but I guess not.

There is a federal program called the Statewide Longitudinal Data Base. It is run in conjunction with Common Core. This program compiles data from a list of personal questions asked of the children and includes the test results. Imagine what an unscrupulous government could do with the type of information that could be gleaned from this list.

The philosophy of common core is servile arts Vs classical liberal arts; all the difference between creating nationally programmed drones or liberty loving, critical thinking individuals.

You are mild compared to fshnski. I don't see how a form member can tell another forum member to go F**k themselves multiple times without being banned. Where is the justice in this forum anyway. People have disappeared because of there actions and this guy fshnski gets away with going ballistic.
Is this how a Wolfeboro forum is going to be run?

Feds to control our children. Empty Arne Duncan: ‘White suburban moms’ upset that Common Core shows their kids aren’t ‘brilliant’

Post  fshnski Sun Nov 17, 2013 8:26 am

U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan told a group of state schools superintendents Friday that he found it “fascinating” that some of the opposition to the Common Core State Standards has come from “white suburban moms who — all of a sudden — their child isn’t as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isn’t quite as good as they thought they were.”

Yes, he really said that. But he has said similar things before. What, exactly, is he talking about?

In his cheerleading for the controversial Common Core State Standards — which were approved by 45 states and the District of Columbia and are now being implemented across the country — Duncan has repeatedly noted that the standards and the standardized testing that goes along with them are supposedly more difficult than students in most states have confronted.

The Core was designed to elevate teaching and learning. Supporters say it does that; critics say it doesn’t and that some of the standards, especially for young children, are not developmentally appropriate. Whichever side you fall on regarding the Core’s academic value, there is no question that their implementation in many areas has been miserable — so miserable that American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, a Core supporter, recently compared it to another particularly troubled rollout:

You think the Obamacare implementation is bad? The implementation of the Common Core is far worse.

Feds to control our children. Empty A $4.35 billion taxpayer dollar bribe.

Post  fshnski Sun Nov 17, 2013 8:51 am

Speaking at a local school board meeting earlier this month, a Tennessee high school senior issued a brief and incredibly insightful address on the problems with Common Core standards.

Ethan Young, a student at Farragut High School in Knox County, Tenn., made his case as to why he believes the school district should drop the new national education standards, a set of guidelines that were never voted on by Congress, the Department of Education nor by local or state governments.

“The president essentially bribed states into implementation via ‘Race to the Top,’ offering $4.35 billion taxpayer dollars to participating states, $500 million of which went to Tennessee,” Young said. “And much like No Child Left Behind, the program promises national testing and a one-size-fits-all education, because hey, it worked so well the first time.”

“If nothing else, these standards are a glowing conflict of interest and they lack the research they allegedly received,” he added.

Young also argued that Common Core standards display a “mistrust of teachers,” a line that prompted applause from the audience.

“I stand before you because I care about education, but also because I want to support my teachers,” he said. “And just as they fought for my academic achievement, so I want to fight for their ability to teach. This relationship is at the heart of instruction, yet there will never be a system by which it is accurately measured.”

The high school senior went on to argue that “standards-based education is ruining the way we teach and learn.” He also revealed that legislators and administrators have told him “that’s just the way things work.”

Now, he’s daring to ask: “Why?”

“I’m gonna answer that question: Bureaucratic convenience,” he added. “It works with nuclear reactors, it works with business models, why can’t it work with students? I mean how convenient, calculating exactly who knows what and who needs what. I mean, why don’t we just manufacture robots instead of students? They last longer and they always do what they’re told.”

The problem is, the extremely bright student continued, “education is unlike every other bureaucratic institute in our government” because the “task of teaching is never quantifiable.”

“If everything I learn in high school is a measurable objective, I have not learned anything,” Young proclaimed. “I’d like to repeat that. If everything I learn in high school is a measurable objective, I have not learned anything.”

Government bureaucrats will never be able to measure “creativity, appreciation, inquisitiveness” but they are the “purpose of education,” he lectured.

“Somewhere our Founding Fathers are turning in their graves — pleading, screaming and trying to say to us that we teach to free minds. We teach to inspire. We teach to equip, the careers will come naturally.”

Feds to control our children. Empty Protests widen against Obama-backed Common Core education reforms

Post  fshnski Mon Nov 18, 2013 11:52 am

A fierce battle in New York is the latest sign that populist resistance to the Obama administration-backed Common Core education reforms shows no signs of slowing — and that the opposition isn’t limited to red states.

Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the Common Core benchmarks for proficiency in English and math for schoolchildren at the end of each grade.

Critics say several states are experiencing buyers’ remorse after complaints from parents and scholars that the reforms are untested and poorly designed and put additional burdens on teachers and students. They also say Common Core represents a federal government intrusion into an area traditionally operated at the state and local levels.

Common Core, backed by $4.35 billion offered to states through President Obama’s 2009 stimulus, appeared to be overcoming opposition when it was implemented.

Now, however, backlash has been gaining force. Blogger Michele Zipp of The Stir last week said Common Core “is kind of turning into the Obamacare of education.”
