As the morning breaks some amazing acts of bravery are being told. Teachers shielding children with their bodies. It must have been a horrible experience.

While trying to find "Black Cat Weather", I stumbled onto this Winnipesaukee.com account of a local 2008 tornado warning:

http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6233

This was the same year as an actual tornado touch-down at Lake Wentworth's eastern shore. (...and its devastation continued north to the town of Granite—18 total miles of devastation).

Shocked

It is truly a tragedy, and despite the fact that Oklahoma Senators James Imhofe and Tom Coburn voted against the $50 billion Hurricane Sandy bill, I hope they get all the help they need from the federal government. That's what governments are supposed to do. They already got their offset in the additional $200 billion reduction in this year's deficit.

Tom Colburn said this morning that he couldn't vote for disaster funding to Okla unless it included off-sets....I think oil subsidies would be a good place to start.
And, of course, Imhofe is still denying climate change has anything to do w/ these extreme weather conditions.... Rolling Eyes

I was on my porch when the last one went through. It was only about a mile away to the sou'east of me. The wind got so bad I went inside to run downstairs to the cellar. By the time I shut the slider it had past. It got my heart beating! I can only imagine what these poor folks went through. I heard that it was a 30 mile swath by up to two miles across.

I agree that oil subsidies would be a good place to start! I'm sure that the New York and New Jersey delegation in the Senate, all Democrats, will do the right thing and vote to send the aid to Oklahoma, despite Imhofe and Coburn.

Republicans have no shame...
Oklahoma and Texas rank as the top two states in FEMA disaster declarations; combined, they account for more than a quarter of declared disasters since 2009. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that the senators have requested disaster aid for severe storms and drought, even though Coburn is willing to hold up relief with his demands.
1. In September 2011, Coburn offered an amendment to offset $6.9 billion in FEMA funding.

2. Coburn voted in 2011 against funding FEMA after it ran out of money, because, in his words, funding FEMA would have been “unconscionable.” Inhofe did not vote. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid fired back at Republicans blocking a bill for necessary funding to FEMA.

3. Inhofe proposed removing grants for storm shelter programs coordinating with FEMA, and instead provide individuals with tax breaks.

4. Coburn criticized items in Sandy disaster relief such as $12.9 billion for disaster mitigiation and $366 million for Amtrak as “wasteful spending.”

5. After Hurricane Sandy, Inhofe and Coburn voted against a bill for $50.5 billion in Hurrican Sandy disaster relief.

6. Coburn demanded that $5.25 billion in FEMA grant funds be reallocated because of sequestration in April 2013.

What a mess out mid-west. Empty Tornado upgraded to a EF5.

Post  fshnski Tue May 21, 2013 4:48 pm

MOORE, Okla. (CNN) —The tornado that struck central Oklahoma on Monday was an EF5 -- meaning it had winds of 200 mph or greater -- for at least some of the time it was ravaging an area near Oklahoma City, the National Weather Service said.

The weather service said its crews found at least one area with damage indicative of an EF5 tornado.

The Monday afternoon storm carved a trail through the area as much as two miles wide and 17 miles long, officials said. Hardest hit was Moore, Oklahoma -- a suburban town of about 56,000 and the site of eerily similar twisters in 1999 and again four years later.

At a Tuesday afternoon news conference, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin said the storm was one of the "most horrific storms and disasters that this state has ever faced."

All that remained in some places, she said, were "sticks and bricks."

The state medical examiner's office said 24 people were confirmed dead, including nine children.

Earlier reports of at least 51 deaths were erroneous, said Amy Elliot, chief administrative officer for the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

But Fallin said the death toll could still rise. She said some bodies may have been taken to funeral homes without the government's knowledge.

More than 230 people were injured.

At least 100 people have been pulled alive from the rubble by rescuers.

Parts of Moore, OK, were found in Arkansas. Shocked

Moore residents have to walk! Nobody can drive around—asphalt pavement has been ripped from the ground...

Red Cross, Salvation Army, Baptist churches, Methodist churches—but especially Wal-Mart—have pitched in. Millions of cash-dollars have been sent from [evil] "Corporate-America". Surprised

What a mess out mid-west. Empty From a Canadian Newspaper...

Post  News Hawk Sat Jun 01, 2013 8:49 pm

AP reports:

"Everything had to come together just perfectly to create the killer tornado in Moore, Okla.: wind speed, moisture in the air, temperature and timing. And when they did, the awesome energy released over that city dwarfed the power of the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service gave it the top-of-the-scale rating of EF5 for wind speed and breadth, and severity of damage. Wind speeds were estimated at between 200 and 210 mph. The death count is 24 so far, including at least nine children. The United States averages about one EF5 a year..."

When your state votes for the wrong candidate...

"A Canadian shipment of relief goods bound for storm-ravaged Oklahoma has been stopped at the Canada-U.S. border in Windsor, Ont.

American officials will not allow the 20,000 kilograms of food, blankets and diapers into the country until every item on board is itemized in alphabetical order and has the country of origin of every product noted.

Dennis Sauve, the volunteer co-ordinator for Windsor Lifeline Outreach and the food bank co-ordinator at the Windsor Christian Fellowship, the two organizations that gathered the goods, said it's a "physical impossibility" to do the paperwork required in time to get the perishable food to Oklahoma before it spoils.

Because U.S. President Barack Obama hasn't declared Moore, Okla., tornado a disaster area, the 52-foot trailer of goods is considered a commercial shipment rather than humanitarian aid."

When you don't have the IRS available to punish Canadian Christian-relief shipments...

Isn't that just awful??!! They don't have a thing left, and need everything and we have to stop it and put items in alphabetical order. That is government rules and regulations for you, a government gone very wrong. Let the people starve instead of getting the food to them.

Because the affected area needs to start from NOTHING?

Our neighbor to the north, the one we declined help from, was probably just one of dozens of nations that came to our aid. I hope they didn't have the same problems with logistics.
