Obama Leaves 'Under God' Out of His Gettysburg Address Reading for PBS Star
Chris Plante at WMAL Radio in Washington reported on his show Tuesday that President Obama joined a cast of 61 "noted lawmakers, politicians, news anchors and celebrities, including every living President, in reciting the Gettysburg Address" for PBS star Ken Burns, who made "The Civil War" documentary series.
Everyone else delivered the address as Lincoln had written it, including the phrase, "that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom." But in his version of the address, President Obama omitted the words "under God." (Video below, at about 1:35.) Will the networks notice this gaffe?

Jay Carney can't explain Obama skipping Gettysburg Address memorial
President Obama's spokesman offered no explanation for his boss's decision to skip the memorial marking the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
"I don't have any scheduling updates to provide to you," White House press secretary Jay Carney.
Obama came under criticism for the decision to skip the event from local media last month.
"For a president who has so demonstrably associated himself with Lincoln -- the heir of Lincoln's policies who announced his candidacy from the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield and used the Lincoln Bible (twice) at his inauguration -- this is nothing less than a profile in cowardice," Donald Gilliland wrote at PennLive.com.
Obama did participate in a PBS promotion of Ken Burns' documentary on the Gettysburg Address.
"With regards to the president, beyond what you just described, I don't have anything more for you," Carney said in reference to the PBS work.

obama read almost the whole thing on the video in the link. If you want to get sick watch how little passion he puts into it.WHL wrote:What did they each recite the G A over and over?
I have seen another video where each living president reads a part in succession ending with obama.

I did watch Obama read it. I just didn't understand the whole concept. Did they all get together and read it for Ken Burns or what????

Yes, It's part of a documentary that is being produced by Ken Burns. I love his work but Burns definitely leans left.

FshNski When doing research to try to dispute something that you believe was said in error you really should actually read it before publishing.
There are 5 known copies of the Gettysburg address and your link provides the description of how each came to be and includes the text. According to your own research you agree with me and the White House while proving the right wing talking heads, who will stop at nothing to discredit President Obama, wrong again.
In the address that Lincoln gave there was no mention of God.
Bliss Copy
Ever since Lincoln wrote it in 1864, this version has been the most often reproduced, notably on the walls of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. It is named after Colonel Alexander Bliss, stepson of historian George Bancroft. Bancroft asked President Lincoln for a copy to use as a fundraiser for soldiers (see "Bancroft Copy" below). However, because Lincoln wrote on both sides of the paper, the speech could not be reprinted, so Lincoln made another copy at Bliss's request. It is the last known copy written by Lincoln and the only one signed and dated by him. Today it is on display at the Lincoln Room of the White House.
Ergo, not the original speech
Everett Copy
Edward Everett, the chief speaker at the Gettysburg cemetery dedication, clearly was impressed by Lincoln's remarks and wrote to him the next day saying, "I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes." In 1864 Everett asked Lincoln for a copy of the speech to benefit Union soldiers, making it the third manuscript copy. Eventually the state of Illinois acquired it, where it's preserved at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
Ergo, not the original speech
Bancroft Copy
As noted above, historian George Bancroft asked President Lincoln for a copy to use as a fundraiser for soldiers. When Lincoln sent his copy on February 29, 1864, he used both sides of the paper, rendering the manuscript useless for lithographic engraving. So Bancroft kept this copy and Lincoln had to produce an additional one (Bliss Copy). The Bancroft copy is now owned by Cornell University.
Ergo, not the original speech
Nicolay Copy
Named for John G. Nicolay, President Lincoln's personal secretary, this is considered the "first draft" of the speech, begun in Washington on White house stationery. The second page is writen on different paper stock, indicating it was finished in Gettysburg before the cemetery dedication began. Lincoln gave this draft to Nicolay, who went to Gettysburg with Lincoln and witnessed the speech. The Library of Congress owns this manuscript.
Ergo, not the original speech

Hay Copy
Believed to be the second draft of the speech, President Lincoln gave this copy to John Hay, a White House assistant. Hay accompanied Lincoln to Gettysburg and briefly referred to the speech in his diary: "the President, in a fine, free way, with more grace than is his wont, said his half dozen words of consecration." The Hay copy, which includes Lincoln's handwritten changes, also is owned by the Library of Congress.
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met here on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but can never forget what they did here.
It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Then I am glad that you have come around and admit that according to historians and all the evidence that "God" was added to copies of the speech AFTER it was delivered by Lincoln and the right wing talking heads don't know how to research a story before going on the air and getting it wrong.
You really thought fshnski was hard to figure out?

Take a break, over 20 posts a day is way too much.
Set a goal that will reduce your posts by at least one a day until you get down to maybe five. There is no need for anyone to post over five posts a day.
Think a little before you post also. I'll join in if you stop commenting immediately after someone makes a comment. It's annoying and we get no where because of it.

Anybody care to leave aside the minor historical footnote as to whether God was mentioned in the Gettysburg Address and debate the larger question:
That Lincoln was a tyrant who unleashed total war on the North American continent that left millions dead and ushered in the concept of the all empowered federal government that makes a mockery of the Founder's original intent of local control and limited federal powers?
That the government he in many ways created is a mockery of the one he so glibly talked about at Gettysburg?

Anti, I think you are saying the Civil War was not about slavery but about making sure the federal government kept control of the states, that they could not go off and do their individual thing. Of course that is not what we were taught in school. I never heard that until a few years ago.
