A sheriff in Arizona has come up with a controversial cost-saving measure to help with the budget.
He plans to start charging inmates for their meals.
Each day, the roughly 8,300 inmates at the Maricopa County Jail receive two meals.
Starting next month, they will have to pay $1 apiece for those meals.
“Everybody else has to pay for their food. Why should they get freebies? Those who don't have the money; c'mon we're still going to feed them,” said Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County sheriff.
The sheriff said he would eventually like to start charging a housing fee as well.
