NBC News veteran Tom Brokaw announced Tuesday that he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting blood cells in the bone marrow, in August.

In a statement, published on NBCNews.com, Brokaw said he and physicians at the Mayo Clinic were very encouraged with his progress.

"With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come," Brokaw wrote.

Brokaw joined NBC News 1966 and served as the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News from 1982 to 2004. He currently serves as a special correspondent.

Brokaw has appeared across NBC programming since the diagnosis in August, including appearances on "Nightly," "Today," “Meet the Press,” and MSNBC. He also appeared in a documentary on the JFK assassination and, most recently, has contributed to the network's coverage of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

“I remain the luckiest guy I know," Brokaw said in his statement. “I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter.”

Brokaw has a daily spot on the radio where he issues insipid tales and platitudes.

Maybe he's trying to appeal to Wolfeboro's "National-Socialists", 'cuz I ain't buying it.
