Obamacare surcharge
Two restaurant chains are charging a 1% surcharge on each customer's bill to pay for Obamacare for their employees.

That's $1 on $100. Are you saying you can't afford that?

Florida offers individual Counties an additional 1% "above" Florida's sales tax.
However, Florida's restaurants appeal to people rich enough to be out-of-state tourists.

Would those chains add the surcharge to New Hampshire's "Meals and Room Tax"?
Re: Obamacare surcharge
WHL only gives us part of the information, as usual, as she did not identify the restaurants, and I don't see this having anything to do with the "rooms and meals" tax. How many restaurant chains have a big presence in New Hampshire? Carrabas has a big footprint in Florida, but there may only be one up here.

It'll get called "The One-Penny Sales Charge".
Everybody can afford one penny.
Re: Obamacare surcharge
I support this idea.
I am also in favor of eliminating income tax withholding among other things, for the same reason.
Make people cut a check each month to the FedCoats.

Can't you do that now, only quarterly?

Exactly, Anti. Then they would know what they give to the gov each pay period. Now most don't really know although they should. No NB, you cannot do that if you get a paycheck. If you work for yourself you do.

Re: Obamacare surcharge
It was income withholding that got us in the healthcare mess.

I know I am sometimes vague just to aggravate you NB, but in this case I can't remember the name of the restaurant. I saw it on tv and they said it was the second restaurant to do this. But it was not Carrabba's. I didn't try to google it.

If you dropped two dimes after a lunch, would you stop to pick them up?
...or leave the two dimes for the waitress as...a tip?

I didn't know that Gator's Dockside was a restaurant chain!

This is typical politician speak. Do you notice how every time a government (especially a town government) wants to convince voters to vote for something they say it will add (a certain amount- say 5cents) to a hundred thousand dollar home? So that makes it sound like very little. The problem is when you add up every expense and the fact that most homes aren't 100,000, we get to where our tax rates are today. So, just as you say, NH, two dimes to some might not sound like much but when you add enough of them up you have a million dollars.

Re: Obamacare surcharge
Tuftonboro has arguably the lowest tax rate in the state that is still under $10 per thousand, and yet there are still some who complain!

New Hampshire needs a sales tax—like most states already have—to balance the state's books.

I'm not taking the bait on that, but New Hampshire is rapidly falling behind in it's infrastructure and many other needs. Some people would rather commit suicide by jumping off their wallets

Re: Obamacare surcharge
The state of NH needs to get rid of the waste and then we won't need any new taxes. As do all states and the federal government.

That's the standard conservative line and you truly live in a dream world. Do you charge the same prices for your products that you did in the early 90s? That's the last time we raised our gas taxes, 1991.

You are the one who lives in the dream world. Government does all sorts of things it has no business doing. Google it and you will see lots of different articles on waste. You might wake up-but maybe not---

Re: Obamacare surcharge
The most enormous waste is the millions and millions of dollars we pour into congress so they can pass 55 bills in 2013, and their work schedule this year is something like 124 days.
I wouldn't trust anything Coburn says, and the federal government really has nothing to do with the needs of New Hampshire, which are many.

Amazing what happens when everything is valued in funny FED money.
Twenty five cents, in a PRE 1964 quarter, will buy a gallon of gas.

I wonder how any millions of FedCoat dollars were spent on the new surveillance camera grid on the abomination they are digging on the south end of Rt. 16?
A million bucks will fix a lot of potholes, but paying some creepy surveillance contractor in Maryland to keep a hairy eyeball on all of us is more important.

As one formerly employed by the Federal Government on three occasions, there is plenty of waste with just the act of complying with all the increasingly complex regulations...
(... that were written by those who wanted to keep their Government jobs by building their own Empires...)
