American Healthcare A Pain In The Arse

Damn right it is.

The reason is because of 50 plus years of government tomfu*kery in the health care market and system, to where it is now just a confusing Charlie Foxtrot.

At one point, I had a choice of four healthcare plans, and shopped every year for the one that met my goals the best. It was a little confusing because I didn't know what I wanted just by glancing at the choices—you had to read through them. I did OK, moving only once in a decade, and staying with a great dental plan the longest.  You do have to think!

Brits want their simple system free, and don't understand why we'd like to "stay with our doctor", or "stay with our plan"—"If you like them".

From your article:

Camac moved to the United States in 1991 from Lewes, East Sussex, to attend college and never left. He now runs his own business conference company and provides health insurance for his staff.

But even a fan of America like Camac has some reservations about its health insurance system.

“It is confusing,” said Camac. “I don’t think it is the best model. You have to think about it and pick a plan. It’s a pain in the arse.”

But he is quick to add: “There is more bureaucracy but I think once you start using it, it’s fine … the treatment and facilities are better than in Britain.

(And Canada's).

I received a notice from the VA today, stating, "If you've had to wait more than 30 days to see a doctor, or had to travel more than 40 miles by car or boat, use the enclosed new Veterans "Choice-Card" at any facility. Call to see if you are eligible.

www.va.gov/healthbenefits/apply

Of course, as I have said here before, the VA turned me down for the treatment guaranteed by a card I saved from my day of enlistment. I can appeal, but the appeal must be based only within two courses: victim of sexual assault, or recently returned from Afghanistan or Iraq. This radical change took effect in 2009, which was during the Obama administration, to "fundamentally change America".

I'm sure Brits (like Veterans) would be content to wait 30 days for their government-funded doctor appointments. The appointment for which must be approved in advance!

Another Obamacare Supporter Just Got A Hard Dose Of Reality

Another day, another "I told you so."

Melissa Klein of San Francisco was a huge Obamacare supporter four years ago. Because four years ago, the stupid thing hadn't been implemented and the liberals who were completely in love with it were in love with the theory. But now that it's officially in effect for a year - Melissa and others like her and finding out that, in reality, the government really doesn't know what they're doing.

She's detailed both on Twitter and her blog the total nightmare it is to get anything resolved. According to her blog, when she went to get the 1095-A form so she could file her taxes (that's the form that proves to the IRS you have health insurance so you don't get dinged with a penalty. Why it's any business of the IRS... but I digress), the health care exchange Covered California had zero record of her EVER being enrolled. Which is ridiculous because Melissa has several pieces of correspondence saying that she IS enrolled - including invoices for payments to Covered California. As in, she has sent ACTUAL MONEY to the exchange so she can have health coverage. At first, she thought it wouldn't be a big deal. Sometimes online orders go awry and all you have to do is make a few calls to Amazon Customer Support (this is her example) and they fix the problem within days, if not hours. Surely ordering health insurance from the government would be just as easy, right?

(Oh, Melissa - part of me wishes you didn't have to learn this the hard way and you could go on living in your lovely fantasy realm).

Long story short - and in an insane process involving faxing forms, waiting 60 days, having to file for a tax extension so they can get this resolved - Melissa is no closer to having the all-important proof of coverage and, thus, is in danger of being penalized for not having insurance, even though she's paid for it. Her blog post ends with this sentiment (emphasis added) -

"It saddens me to say this, but I no longer believe that the government should mandate health care. It’s not because I’ve abandoned the basic principles behind health care reform. Quite the contrary. But a great idea, is just an idea, if you can’t execute. And the government has proven time and time again, it can’t execute. So I’m over it until someone figures it out."
