Something lake related

Post  obervantone on Sat Jun 20, 2015 4:42 pm

Hoping for a good out come. Let's see how long it takes to turn this into It's-Not-News Hawk's favorite topic.

PFDs for Thee, but Not Me...

Post  News Hawk on Sun Jun 21, 2015 5:57 am

Judging by the radius of the powerboat's turning while not under control, it appears the operator would have been ejected by hitting another boat's wake, and not by a "wrong" turn of the tiller. (Weekends bring out oversized boats on Lake Winnipesaukee).

"Safe power-boater clubs" like SBONH or NHRBA are ready and anxious to tell paddlers to wear life preservers, while ignoring the same for themselves.

This one precaution would have made all the difference.

That didn't take...

Post  obervantone on Mon Jun 22, 2015 5:59 pm

...as long as I thought it would. I figured It's-Not-News Hawks would at least wait until Mr. Tringale was found before he started jumping to conclusions. No doubt the dog told him everything.

Followup = Blank spaces

Post  News Hawk on Tue Jun 23, 2015 6:50 am

Other than finding the body, what will be released regarding the apparent boating death? Most of the time, little is seen as to "follow-up reporting": which leaves only speculation. That you won't even defend PFDs for power boaters says a great deal.

So you doubt the efficacy of a PFD in powerboats? I wonder if the dog had one, while the operator obviously did not? (Or, he'd be found already).  Sad

Steering cable snapped

Post  obervantone on Tue Jun 23, 2015 12:53 pm

So much for It's-Not-News Hawk's latest jump to a conclusion that he approves of:
Judging by the radius of the powerboat's turning while not under control, it appears the operator would have been ejected by hitting another boat's wake, and not by a "wrong" turn of the tiller. (Weekends bring out oversized boats on Lake Winnipesaukee).

Then of course It's-Not-News Hawk's declaration
Other than finding the body, what will be released regarding the apparent boating death? Most of the time, little is seen as to "follow-up reporting": which leaves only speculation.

As reported today:
LACONIA, N.H. —The search for a missing boater on Lake Winnipesaukee continued for a fourth day Tuesday.
New Hampshire authorities have released the name of a man who has been missing since his empty boat was found on Lake Winnipesaukee over the weekend.
The state marine patrol has been looking for Domenic Tringale, 63, of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, since Saturday.
Tringale’s boat was found going in circles near Governor's Island with only a dog inside.
Marine patrol officials said a snapped steering cable may have caused the boat to suddenly turn, knocking the man into the water.

He was out fishing near Stonedam Island according to family members.

Finally It's-Not-News Hawk's determination that his death is the fault of SBONH...
"Safe power-boater clubs" like SBONH or NHRBA are ready and anxious to tell paddlers to wear life preservers, while ignoring the same for themselves.

This one precaution would have made all the difference.

FYI the Coat Guard is looking for a redesign of PFD's to get people to actually wear them.   It's-Not-News Hawk, you are prolific with a camera...how about a shot of you, underway on your boat....if you look hard enough you might find one where you are wearing a PFD, I'm going to speculate that in most, if not all, you are not wearing one.  SBONH's fault no doubt!

My thoughts and prayers are with the gentleman and his family.

Speculate away:

In a kayak I retired from service 15 years ago, my "prolific camera" shows I'm wearing a gold-color PFD in the photo here. I still use the same PFD, but the zipper is worn and difficult to engage when dry:

FYI: The Coast Guard has approved an inflatable PFD that had been in use previously in Europe for years and years.

Post  obervantone on Thu Jun 25, 2015 1:04 pm

The best you can do is a photo that is by your own admission at least 15 years old that doesn't really depict anyone wearing a PFD. Lecture away.

BTW they found the gentleman's body around noon yesterday. MP suggests a snapped steering cable caused him to go overboard. I won't jump to conclusions about what happened after that, I'll leave that up to It's-Not-News Hawk.

I don't take many photos of myself, but for the sake of a classified advertisement, I would.

Edge-on, you're looking at the left side of an unzipped gold/yellow PFD—black-colored edges.

The steering cable could have been disabled long ago; moreover, it's easy to be jarred from operating a tiller-equipped outboard. In either case, the catalyst for disaster was likely an oversized boat wake.  The "instigator" is probably ignorant of his having fatally ejected a boat's operator, and merrily continued on his way.

Then we can draw the conclusion that the last time you wore a PFD was 15 years ago and even back then you wore it improperly.

Now you are questioning the MP preliminary investigation since it does not jive with your fabrication. It was the MP that said the steering cable snapped likely throwing the gentleman from the boat. Give it a rest.

Was it an new break?

Holding a steering wheel gives some support from being ejected, while operating with a tiller is very dicey. That the boat was circling in a wide path suggests that the boat met with a big wake.

Now I'm resting...

Cool

Obviously, you...someone who has never seen the vessel, must have a much clearer picture of what happened than investigators that have examined the boat. You deserve that rest, all that fiction must be very tiring for you.

I have no trouble relating with the decedent, as I have been ejected from a boat, and had it circle near me.  I learned as a teenager, that it is very difficult to grab onto it from the water. In less than a minute, a very old Laker (and old gentleman) came by to rescue me and my boat. I thank him now, as I once thanked him at Winni.com.

You're new  to the lake, and to Winni.com?

Which in your mind undoubtedly means any such incident occurs exactly as yours did, or was caused by a passing boat's wake. You can make that determination based on your personal experience without having to physically examine the evidence as investigators do....must be great to be you!

BTW this is the Wolfboro/Gilford forum, not Winni.com

Correctly spelled, Wolfeboro has an "e".

obervantone wrote:You can make that determination based on your personal experience without having to physically examine the evidence as investigators do.

If you know where the boat is impounded, I'll take a look; otherwise, the best I can do is from experience.

obervantone wrote:Which in your mind undoubtedly means any such incident occurs exactly as yours did, or was caused by a passing boat's wake.

Not just any boat's wake.

Evil or Very Mad

My own personal experience told me to beware of boats with a "hard chine"—like my own outboard boat had. Other wakes were seldom encountered before Lake Winnipesaukee "got discovered" by loud and oversized boats.  I had another boat sink from under me by an oversized cruiser's wake—who was pulling a water skier!

I readily sympathize with small outboards, rowboats, sailing dinghies, inflatables, and any paddle boaters in Lake Winnipesaukee's protected waters.

After you've made your determination because it could no possibly happened any other way in your mind...THEN you are willing to "look" at the evidence, a true professional!

So it sounds like Mr Tringale died of a heart attack, whether before or after he was ejected is unknown. It sounds like his steering cable was broken which caused the boat to go in circles which likely caused the ejection. This former president of SBONH posted numerous times about wearing PFDs when fishing particularly early and late season.

Newsdoufus- how long have the mailboats been on this lake? They easily throw the largest wake of any boat on this lake. Boats have gotten larger because they are needed on this lake. Many of us have been out in the broads in 4-5 footers caused by WEATHER

I would speculate that the preliminary MP investigation is correct.

The gentleman's steering cable snapped throwing him into the water where the shock of the water or the stress caused by trying to grab onto the boat that was now moving in circles, or combination of the two, prompted his heart attack.

Having the safety lanyard attached to the cut-off switch in the boat certainly may have helped but most people don't attach them because it limits their mobility on the boat.

Regarding PFDs, they do make inflatable PFDs that will automatically inflate if you hit the water, but again getting people to wear them has always been an issue and obviously in this case the gentleman was not wearing a PFD or have a safety lanyard attached.   Sad.

Here it is, as of last week. I wore it today. It's a perfect fit, a Stearns, and made in the USA.

A brand-new Chinese-made PFD I found floating in the water appeared to have a body still in it!  Shocked  However, it had absorbed so much water, it was barely above the surface—weighed several pounds—unbelievably heavy.

Buy a $30 PFD if your life is worth $30. I'll stay with the Stearns.

Now you are claiming you discovered a body? When and where? I don't recall reading anything recently. That Sterns looks like it's seen better days. I also have a Sterns but mine is bright orange, much easier to see in a man overboard situation and in addition to a whistle I also have glow sticks and sky Blazers in the pockets.
