There are otters in Winnipesaukee—I just haven't seen one. No

Otters spend a good portion of their time swimming under the surface. When one is about to dive below the surface, he'll lift his heavy rear-end above the surface for a brief moment—to help with submerging. (Much like humans).

While Beavers can also swim underwater, they just seem to "slink" under the surface; sometimes, they'll first slap the water with their broad tails. The sound is surprisingly loud! Shocked

Otters are very curious. If you were to toss out a ball, they'd turn from their path, and go play with it.

The confusion could be cleared up with a comparison of behaviors.

No sooner than I describe "behavior" of an otter diving below the surface, and someone produces a video showing exactly that!

I saw an otter last summer. It was the first one I have ever seen on the lake. He was in my yard at first quite a distance away and I thought it was a dog. He looked kind of like a chocolate lab?? Eventually he went into the lake and a bit later I saw two of them jumping in and out of the water like they were playing.

Otters are known for eating birds: one Internet photo shows two otters having a Mallard for lunch!

Shocked
