Did the Donzi Poker Race Cost Winnipesaukee One Loon?
This is sad news, as the Loon is a locally-endangered bird, and an icon for Golden Pond.
A dead Loon was reported afloat in the same area as the Poker Race. Many complaints of rampant ignorance of New Hampshire's boater rights and responsibilities have appeared on local Internet sites.
I'd just mentioned—last week—that performance boats don't look out for the presence of life ahead!

I hope that's not true.

The reporter knew enough to describe the dead bird as having its feet "far back" on its body. (The feet of a Loon are set back like Penguins' feet).
This is the first eyewitness-report I've seen of a dead Loon on Lake Winnipesaukee.
Reports of illegal Poker-Race participants' activities also came to the surface yesterday. (Irrational "Group Behavior" is how mobs develop). Complaints of Donzi (group) behavior go 'way back in The Granite State News and the Winni.com forum.
I would expect this tragedy would happen on our newly-madhouse weekends, but that it happened during an annual Donzi Poker Race can't simply be chalked-up to "coincidence".

I feel very badly about the loon, but NH, that is a stretch to say you think the Donzi Poker Race caused it.

Do you have proof, was there a sighting?

Right island.WHL wrote:I feel very badly about the loon, but NH, that is a stretch to say you think the Donzi Poker Race caused it.
Right NWZ.
With Poker Race, much high speed boat activity.
This, among zero other adult Loon deaths documented at FATP.
Here, you've already witnessed a Loon's close-call with ONE pontoon boat towing a tube at low speed. (YouTube).
I documented a different close-call with a low-powered outboard boat off The Compound. (Two Loons on the surface).

But hasn't that been changed to say that maybe it was a Canadian goose, not a loon?

The Poker "run" has an MP escort. As discussed elsewhere they kept within the speed limit.News Hawk wrote:Right island.WHL wrote:I feel very badly about the loon, but NH, that is a stretch to say you think the Donzi Poker Race caused it.

Please post your facts that show this was a high speed race.

I was in the poker run in my 22ft crown line and as it has a max speed of 47mph, I was able to stay with the group.
News hawk, any proof that a drive in the run hit a loon? Or are you twisting facts to make your wish seen plausible?

That was written by someone who didn't see the body—someone who perhaps wished it hadn't happened in real-time with the Poker Race.WHL wrote:But hasn't that been changed to say that maybe it was a Canadian goose, not a loon?
But it had.

Please provide your evidence. As shown above your conclusions are unfounded.News Hawk wrote:That was written by someone who didn't see the body—someone who perhaps wished it hadn't happened in real-time with the Poker Race.WHL wrote:But hasn't that been changed to say that maybe it was a Canadian goose, not a loon?

Also a race entails that there is a winner and their are constestants. If you are not familiar with a Poker Run there are no prizes for finishing first nor are the people participating tracking what order people came in.
With the Donzi Poker "RUN" there is actually a pace boat to ensure that everyone finishes together and that no one exceeds the speed limit.
Did you again want to skip over the part that the Marine Patrol had given an escort to the event?

I watched part of the event , and didn't see anything but much of the Lake overloaded with oversized boats—exercising many acres-per-second of 150' violations.sumrluvr wrote:

Poker Runs have a long and sordid history. Google Mastronardi to see what fatal wrath Poker Runs have had on (particularly) swimmers!
