It's actually a "modern" ship, taken from the Nazi Navy as war reparations following WWII. (It has a history of shooting down enemy warplanes—and one "friendly").
Originally named the SSS Horst Wessel (pronounced "vessel"
) after the martyred SA leader. (The Horst Wessel Song became the Nazi National Anthem).
The spars are steel. (!)
It has sailed at 19-knots.
It takes six to steer in heavy weather.

Nice image of the helm; known as the "triple helm".

Look at the scrap metal behind the ship. Probably most of this scrap metal is headed for China where it will be used to make something that will be sold back to us.
