Sunday's Usual Mayhem...
Actually, not too bad. The cooler weather and rough waters kept the week-enders home—and me back at the dock.
Not as cool and rough as today however—and except for a few intrepid sailboats—which has suppressed boating activity.

My dock is 1-foot above the lake level, as measured Friday. A wake left by one of Sunday's over-sized herd of cruisers had left its mark, so my question is this: was that the result of a one-foot wake or a two-foot wake?

Did you sound a warning siren and run for higher ground? If not what kind of safety advocate are you?
You may need to call the armycore of engineers to check the structural integrity of your dock.
What a POUNDING it took...

Yes his dock looks like it got a real pounding. I pray to God that everyone is all right and that Obama will classify this as a disaster. If he does he will get money from FEMA. The Red Cross will also help somehow.

The lake is still relatively high, and that particular wake wasn't bad as they go. There are times when my dock is completely soaked overall. I asked for opinions of wave height—that's all.
Mine is a question that lake boaters don't seem to agree on.
Question, do you measure waves by crest (only) or crest + trough?
So, this should be simple: those "Safe" boaters—who discuss wave height all the time at FATP—is this a one-foot wave or a two-foot wave?
(Or don't you know—?—which is OK, 'cuz I don't know our "local" answers yet. Perhaps someone who boats on the ocean can give us (or learn for us) a specific answer.
Re: Sunday's Usual Mayhem...
The water HAS been exceptionally high all summer. And I don't see it changing since we are due for more rain in the next few days.

Just a suggestion.... If you want to have a discussion about wave height perhaps you shouldn't start the topic with a title like: Sunday's Mayhem...

OK...I got Admin to change it...
Re: Sunday's Usual Mayhem...
Ever think of posing a simple topic that is to the point like: How to measure wave height.. You come off looking like an idiot thinking a wave that gets your dock wet is considered "mayham".

I thought it was a simple topic.
What's your landlubber's guess?
Re: Sunday's Usual Mayhem...
I always thought it was crest + wave but someone told me I was wrong. I guess if you use the calm surface as your starting point then you would only measure the wave.

Although I risk getting my camera wet by getting swamped by oversized boats, weekends are a win-win for me. I take lots of photos of weekenders doing dumb things.Donzel wrote:My guess is that Sunday's are torture for you.
I can't say that weekends are boring, and still get out on the Lake before 11-AM, when the morning's favorable boating experience starts to unravel.
"Torture" is waiting for self-described "Experienced-Boaters" coming up with one answer—out of only two possible answers—when either answer could be acceptable.
Ocean-Racer, "Aquaholic"
Another Sunday, another violation of "Safe Passage" (closer than it looks). Very nearly got swamped by his (mindless/forgotten) wake.

Re: Sunday's Usual Mayhem...
Judging by the splash emitting from the side of your vessel you were going more than headway speed. Since he is coming from your starboard he has the right of way. So aren't you the one at fault for closing the distance to within the safe passage law? Also if it was such a hazard and you were in immediate danger of being "swamped" how did you suddenly have the time to get your camera and take a picture while continuing your "safe" velocity?
Or is this just another attempt to take a picture and try to make a type of boat you dislike out to be the dangerous one and try to further your agenda?
By the way: Could you please provide a definition as to why this boat would be classified as an Ocean Racer?

(7th attempt requesting an answer) You continuously throw this word around, I would like for you to explain yourself. I believe the forum members and those visiting deserve it or they can conclude you are full of chit.

Re: Sunday's Usual Mayhem...
The camera is kept handy, usually attached by its lanyard to my PFD. Funny, YouTube wouldn't accept the video because I was being jostled so much. The video shows sky, water, my PFD, and occasionally the subject boat. That's why I had to use the monitor to re-photograph the boat.sumrluvr wrote:Well that answers the first part however you seemed to again skip over:News Hawk wrote:The video was taken from my sailboat.
