Re: Rain...
After waking to what sounded like a naval battleship battle at sea—long rolls of thunder—WMUR Doppler Radar is showing a huge and mostly yellow thunderstorm approaching from the SW. It's likely to last 2-3 hours. The biggest mass of rain I can recall.
I hope our driveway doesn't end up in the lake!
Rain often causes mischief with my computer, so I may not be "around" until later.

Re: Rain...
I went out yesterday and I'm glad I did. There was barely a ripple for a while in the afternoon and not too many boats out.

It seems like a wet year, but is it really?
ROCHESTER — Is 2013 proving to be a wet year in Rochester? In may seem that way, with day after day of drizzle or showers or passing thunderstorms, but the statistical answer, or rather, the three answers, may surprise you.
The “normal” amount of rainfall from January through the end of July, based on records going back to 1896, is just under 23 inches, measured at UNH in nearby Durham. And, to put things in perspective, the wettest year in recent times, according to rain gauge measurement taken at Rochester’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, is 39.81 inches from January to July in 2006 — a period that included the infamous Mother’s Day floods, which contributed to that May’s total of 15.31 inches.
Daily precipitation measurements, leading to monthly totals, are recorded at several locations in the city, and last week, we checked in with three of them.
Kristen Henderson, of the City of Rochester’s Wastewater Treatment Plant in Gonic, takes daily tallies so that she can keep tabs on things like stormwater runoff and system infiltration. Her accumulated precipitation total, year to date, is 25.17 inches, which is a little above the “norm” but well below the sogginess of 2006.
Ty Corneau, at Waste Management’s leachate treatment plant over on the other side of the Cocheco River performs a similar task, so that he can get a rough handle on how much liquid his plant is liable to deal with after the rain and melted snow filters through the garbage cells. His total to date for the year is 21.82 inches.
Meanwhile, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration measures rainfall at one of its stations located at Skyhaven Airport, and these figures are publicly available, via e-mail, after going through an online request process. According to this government agency, Rochester has only received 18.42 inches of rain and the snow melt equivalent between January and July of this year. (See the accompanying chart.) The federal government’s May total is particularly surprising, for it is less than half of those totals recorded by local government or private enterprise only a mile or two away as the crow flies.
Variations in totals for the same month at slightly different locations are attributable, apart from inaccurate equipment or readings, to the tracks taken by snow storms and thuderstorms.

Even though it was mostly cloudy today, I thought it was a really nice day! The sun came through just enough to be warm. I wish it was longer!
