I was wondering where some of these words originated.

This photo is from the WWII years in the Pacific:

IF you have the time, here's an immense website of mostly WWII military aircraft. (With a few others tossed in—including the Weirs of 1937).

Great link. Spectacular photos. Is there a "meaner" looking plane than the Corsair?

...even "meaner" with a Marine pilot...

(like "Pappy" Boyington).

With its 36 cylinders in a radial configuration, it's a top contender as the best fighter aircraft of WWII.

 Very Happy

Did you ever see the Corsair at the Rochester Airport? I'm not sure if it was air worthy.

I climbed into the last Corsair I saw at Cecil Field, near Jacksonville Florida. There was a small "boneyard" there.

However, I didn't get a good look at the undercarriage:

Interesting factoid:

By the spring of 1944, Marine pilots were beginning to exploit the type's considerable capabilities in the close-support role, supporting amphibious landings with 450 kilogram (1,000 pound) bombs. The famed pilot Charles Lindbergh flew Corsairs with the Marines as a civilian technical adviser in order to determine how best to increase the Corsair's warload and effectiveness in the attack role. Lindbergh managed to get the F4U into the air with 1,800 kilograms (4,000 pounds) of bombs, with a 900 kilogram (2,000 pound) bomb on the centerline and a 450 kilogram (1,000 pound) bomb under each wing. In the course of such experiments, he performed strikes on Japanese positions during the battle for the Marshall Islands.

When Washington found out, they called him home to help sell War Bonds.

Admiral Yamamoto—in charge of the entire Japanese Imperial Navy—had his reservations about taking on the USA in WWII. He, too, was educated in the US.

Yamamoto is also known to have been upset by the bungling of the Foreign Ministry which led to the attack happening while the countries were technically at peace, thus making the incident an unprovoked sneak attack that would certainly enrage the enemy.[4]
