The House voted 307-25 Thursday to send the Senate a bill enabling restaurants to allow disciplined and leashed dogs on their patios and outdoor areas. Some restaurant owners already allow dogs on their patios, and local code enforcement people generally turn a blind eye.

Some had questioned if the proposal might jeopardize the rights of people with disabilities who rely on service animals. To assuage those fears, the bill requires a sign to be prominently displayed in the outdoor area stating that those with service animals have priority if the dogs can't share the space peacefully.
