Wood frogs krrucking!
Finally heard the wood frogs krucking. They are in a small pond close to my house. The last 4 years they awoke on March 30th, April 12, April 21 and this year today the 14th. The pond was frozen over until 3 days ago.
Love the sounds of spring!

A traditional sound of spring at my house was a telephone call from Eleanor Piper to let me know that the spring peepers were out at the Piper Farm on North Main Street. Eleanor liked her Budweiser and was a pretty cool old lady. She and her husband Ivan are long gone now.

Is that the place with the big barn?
The peepers come out after the pools warm up a little more. spring peepers can make quite a racket can't they?

Oops, I answered so fast I actually missed the second part of your question.
Yes, spring peepers are noisy little buggers.

I saw a cattle egret there once. It was as white as Mary's lamb. In that little vernal pool to the left of the house. The farm must have an interesting history. I always wanted to see in the barn.

Did you ever see a peeper? They can fit on a finger nail! They have an X like marking on their back.

That barn was built by Eleanor's late husband Ivan and the late Paul Snow, a Wolfeboro builder. As area buildings go it is not that terribly old. The farmhouse is much older.
Paul Snow lived just up North Main in a yellow ranch that he built. His son Bob Snow lives there now. He has all those inflated Halloween and Christmas decorations in his yard (in season).

I don't know, but I think not. Bob had no siblings and two sons, neither one named Steve.

I wonder how old the house is? I'll have to get a closer look and make a guess.

I don't believe those Snows are any relation either.
Sorry for quoting your post fsh and mine ended up within it. I don't know how I did that. Must be magic since Matzoh is here.
Funny how that little pond was always in the field by Piper's.
My brother got bit by the Piper's dog very badly when he was around 10. The dog went for his throat and my brother put his arm up and the dog got his arm. Eleanor was quite the lady though, Matzoh. Kind of sad to think about the good old days.

If you're talking about the Piper homestead, I'd guess about 1830 (Tax Avatar site says 1880). If you're talking about Bob Snow's house I'd guess about 1960. (Tax Avatar site says 1962.)

I said that Eleanor was a "cool old lady." That's a compliment.

To Matzoh, Piper's. I'm guessing that was all farmland once?

Most early properties were dedicated to agriculture, dairy and chickens, or some combination thereof.

I knew that ya' old coot! I was thinking of the area around the cemetery. Was Glad Pastures built more recently than Piper's?

No. Glad Pastures was built about 80 years before the Piper homestead, in about 1790.

Re: Wood frogs krrucking!
Glad Pastures is pretty old. I always remember it being there. I don't know when it was built but it was there when I was young. Obviously the house (s) in back to the left in the field were not there as well as the one in the back to the right. What is really different is across the street. Sky Ridge condos was a single family home and all the fields behind it and beside it were open with no houses.

Re: Wood frogs krrucking!
That's a good question. The origins of the Lakeview Cemetery are probably covered in Parker's History of Wolfeboro. As for the oldest graveyard, with so many homestead plots that may be impossible to answer.fshnski wrote:What about the cemetery? Which makes me think, What's the oldest cemetery in town?

Yup. There's probably some early family plots that are lost in time.
