RYE, N.H. —The daughter of a scallop fisherman who pulled up a mammoth tooth from the New Hampshire coast in March has made another rare find -- a tooth and partial jaw of a mastodon.

Capt. Mike Anderson found the mammoth tooth in March while fishing aboard his boat the Rimrack.

This time, it was his 27-year-old daughter, Kelsi Anderson, who spotted the remains of a mastodon, an elephant-like mammal that lived in the area more than 11,000 years ago, when ocean levels were much lower.

The same University of New Hampshire expert who identified the mammoth tooth helped identify the new find.

A marine archaeology expert has advised the Andersons on how to preserve the finds. They said they hope to put them on display at the Rye Library.
