Elizabeth Warren: Don't cut Social Security. Expand it!

If Elizabeth Warren is emerging as a kind of spokeswoman for the new economic populism that many Democratic activists want the party to embrace heading into 2014 and 2016, this speech that Warren is currently delivering on the floor of the Senate suggests the push to expand Social Security could become a key issue in the argument over the Democratic Party of the future.

“Social Security isn’t the answer to all of our retirement problems. We need to find ways to tackle the financial squeeze that is crushing our families. We need to help families start saving again. We need to make sure that more workers have access to better pensions. But in the meantime – so long as these problems continue to exist and so long as we are in the midst of a real and growing retirement crisis – a crisis that is shaking the foundations of what was once a vibrant and secure middle class – the absolute last thing we should be doing is talking about cutting back on Social Security.

There is no example in history of middle class income growing by increasing entitlements. It is a laughable concept. The single greatest correlation with middle class income growth is GDP growth. Given the long term expenditure trajectory for programs for the elderly, it is ludicrous to talk about expanding them. By itself, Medicare and Social Security will bankrupt this country if it isn't reformed. We simply can't keep shoveling more benefits to the elderly with a growing number of old people and a shrinking working population to support them.

Warren is just applying the tired and failed ...er... I mean tried and true philosophy of government, if it doesn't work, do it again, but bigger. Warren advocates even more asset stripping of as many U.S. citizens as possible. Remember, the vast majority of Americans already LOSE money on SS.

I agree SS and Medicare are a huge part of the cost to the gov. and not doubt need to be reformed. However, how can we even talk about this at the same time we are starting a massive program like Obamacare?? And if we are going to reform SS how about we START with removing DISABILITY which has become huge from the SS program? We spent our lives contributing to SS and now we are getting ready to get it, are we going to be told sorry, none for us? I thought it wasn't a tax???
