Re: Are You a Leftie?
Not exactly...the terms in the political sense developed during the French Revolution...Those on the Right backed the Monarchy, those on the Left were Patriots...Chicago Tribune Oct 26, 2012
Nothing much as changed. Those of the Right focus on the bottom line those on the Left are concerned about the populous.
..."In 1789, it seems the newly created national assembly was debating about whether the king would have the right of veto over laws passed by the assembly," says Yann Robert, assistant professor of French and Francophone studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "To the right of the king sat the royalists, and to the left of the king's chair sat the patriotes, as the partisans of the early revolution called themselves." The contemporary press began using the terms 'left' and 'right' for shorthand."

Re: Are You a Leftie?
The Estates General had seats for commoners and peasants to the left—landowners to the right.
In French, gauche is left: droit means both "right" (a direction) and "correct".
In Spanish, left is izquierda and right is derecho: Sneaky vs. direct.
