WOLFEBORO — Independence Day events bring about 20,000 visitors to this lakefront community that has only two roads leading in and out.

In an effort to alleviate traffic to the parade in the morning, and then again for the fireworks display over Brewster Field in the evening, the police department is urging the public to park away from downtown closest to their direction of travel when exiting.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. and the fireworks display begins at approximately 9:30 p.m. and is expected to last until 10:10 p.m.

Police are asking drivers, if they can, to park just off their direction of travel and walk to town. For example, drivers coming from Ossipee on Route 28 should park in the Odd Fellows Hall parking lot, and drivers coming in from Alton (Route 28) should park at the Kingswood Regional High School lot.

Crescent Lake Avenue and Pine Street will be closed to through traffic using barricades and only residents who live on that road or emergency vehicles will be permitted free passage. No parking will be permitted on either side of Crescent Lake Ave.

When the show, police and traffic control officers will help pedestrians cross the roadways from Brewster Academy and Dockside to their motor vehicles. This should take approximately 20 minutes, according to the police department press release.

Officers will release the main artery roads first, such as North and South Main streets, while holding back the secondary road networks and parking lots. These areas will be released when deemed safe, police said. The wait could be 20 to 30 minutes. According to the police, this will be done in order to facilitate a smooth and orderly flow of traffic out of town. By parking closer in proximity to your egress point, you save valuable time and effort and allow yourself a quicker exit home, police said.

Police urge the public to use caution during these two events since there will be a great deal of both pedestrian and motor traffic moving about town.
