The Obama administration has closed off parts of the ocean around Florida to public access as part of the government shutdown, Breitbart.com reported.

Until government funding is restored, the National Park Service says Florida Bay will remain closed and charter boats are prohibited from taking fisherman into 1,100 square miles of open ocean waters.

Biscayne National Park is also off limits and park rangers will be on site to ensure boaters don't enter the water, reports The Citizen in Key West in an article carried online by the Miami Herald.

The shutdown is expected to impact the tourism industry, including internationally popular fishing tournaments in the Florida Keys.

The shutdown of national parks has angered Republican lawmakers, who this week passed a funding measure to reopen the landmarks and memorials but the Democratic-controlled Senate has refused to consider the bill.

“Generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow….” That far-fetched personal ambition, articulated in Barack Obama’s grandiloquent acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, is chicken feed compared with his latest directive with respect to the oceans. Yesterday, he ordered them “shut down.”

That was the instruction conveyed to charter boat captains who depend on Florida’s Biscayne Bay for their livelihood. Breitbart reports that rangers with the National Park Service delivered the bad news that the bay was "closed" due to the partial government shutdown — that until government funding is restored, fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open sea.

If it sounds loony or delusional or vindictive or small-minded, that’s because it is. The move is just the latest act of a self-important man gone mad, a president so drunk with his own imagined power that he believes he can control nature and is lord and master over all he surveys. Yesterday he sent park rangers to close the parking lot at Mount Vernon, the home of the country’s first president. Never mind that the estate is privately owned. Lord Obama decreed it so.

Earlier in the week he dispatched guards to cordon off the World War II monument in D.C., to block access by veterans of the second Great War, many of them wheelchair-bound, so that he could make a statement of defiance to Republicans with whom he refuses to negotiate over the shutdown. Yesterday, the target was the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, his goal being apparently to demonstrate that he is an equal opportunity tyrant, capable of showing the same disdain to veterans of regardless of generation.

The wonderful irony is that Obama believes that Republicans are being petty and obstinate as he delivers edict after edict, not out of necessity but out of caprice. In the words of Breitbart’s Mike Flynn, “this is governing by temper-tantrum.”

The federal government shutdown that began this week because of a standoff between the Obama administration and Republicans over the budget and the president's signature health-care program is hitting Upper Keys backcountry guides in the wallet.

Charter guides received a message from the National Park Service this week that they cannot take clients fishing in Florida Bay until the feds get back to work. That means that more than 1,100 square miles of prime fishing is off limits between the southern tip of the mainland to the Keys until further notice.

As President John F. Kennedy once said,

"We are a Nation of Laws—not of Men"

Unfortunately, the effect of attempting to shut down America's many desirable locations—including the livelihood that the seas provide—will ultimately result in anarchy upon this land.

Alaska lawmakers accused the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of violating federal law by shutting down hunting on its lands during the government shutdown, saying a 1980 law guarantees state residents must have access to the land.

“It seems that agencies are working harder to keep people off federal lands than they have ever worked before to get them to visit federal lands,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Alaska Republican, who questioned the Obama administration’s decisions during the week-old shutdown.

The National Park Service has faced scorching criticism for closing not just parks, but even parking lots and drives that don’t require continual monitoring or upkeep. Other federal land management agencies also are facing criticism.
