NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned Empty NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned

Post  fshnski Mon Oct 21, 2013 11:07 am

France has summoned U.S. Ambassador Charles Rivkin to address claims that the National Security Agency has spied on millions of French citizens, authorities said on Monday.

The French newspaper group, Le Monde, reported that documents from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed that the American spy group had conducted surveillance operations on the country’s citizenry.

In response, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said during a gathering at the European Union that France authorities had demanded the U.S. ambassador head to Paris “immediately” to answer to the claims, USA Today reported.

Specifically, the documents from Mr. Snowden reveal that the NSA conducted a secret program called “US-985D” between December 2012 and January 2013 that intercepted and extracted data from more than 70 million telephone calls that were made in France.

France Interior Minister Manuel Vallas called the report “shocking,” USA Today reported.

But so far, the United States has not responded, Le Monde said.

NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned Empty Re: NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned

President Obama spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday to reassure her that the U.S. "is not monitoring” her communications, White House press secretary Jay Carney announced.

Carney told reporters on Tuesday that Obama and Merkel spoke by telephone about allegations that the National Security Agency had spied on the German leader's cell phone.

Obama “assured the chancellor that the United States is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of the chancellor.”

“The United States is reviewing the way that we gathered the intelligence to make sure that we balance the security concerns of our citizens and allies and the privacy concerns everyone shares,” Carney added.

The report that the NSA may have monitored the German leader is the latest embarrassing disclosure about the security agency's secret surveillance of phone and internet traffic after former government contractor Edward Snowden leaked classified documents.

The Obama administration has had to deal with the fallout from both congressional lawmakers who say they were unaware of the scope of the NSA’s surveillance and from foreign allies who were the targets of the snooping.

President Obama spoke to French President François Hollande earlier this week to address his “legitimate concerns” after a report in Le Monde said the NSA had intercepted 70 million phone calls of French citizens over a one-month period.

Obama has defended the NSA programs publicly, saying that they thwarted terror attacks and helped save lives. But he has also vowed to bring more transparency and oversight to the intelligence community.

Carney said Obama told Merkel that the U.S. “greatly values” its relationship with Germany and that the two leaders decided to “intensify further the cooperation between our intelligence services.”

NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned Empty Re: NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned

BRUSSELS — German Chancellor Angela Merkel says that trust between the US and its partners has to be restored following allegations that American intelligence targeted her cellphone.

Merkel said she told President Barack Obama in a phone call that “spying among friends cannot be.” She said there needs to be trust among allies and partners and “such trust now has to be built anew.”

Merkel spoke Thursday as she arrived at a summit of the European Union’s 28 leaders.

Merkel complained to Obama on Wednesday after receiving information her cellphone may have been monitored. The White House said the US isn’t monitoring and won’t monitor Merkel’s communications — but didn’t address what might have happened in the past.

NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned Empty Boeing Might Lose $4B Brazil Deal For F-18 Jets After NSA Surveillance Scandal

Post  fshnski Fri Oct 25, 2013 6:18 pm

Brazil did not take it lightly when it found out that the U.S. National Security Agency had been spying on official correspondence, calls and emails from the Brazilian government. President Dilma Rousseff, whose cell phone had been tapped by the spy agency, asked for explanations and an apology from President Barack Obama, while Brazilian diplomats called the surveillance an “attack on sovereignty.”

But the NSA operation revealed by leaker Edward Snowden might have damaged more than relations between the two biggest economies in the Americas. It might also have put in jeopardy a $4 billion deal for fighter jets that was, until recently, almost a done deal for Boeing (NYSE:BA).

Brazil is in the market for 36 new fighter jets to modernize its air force. The order was hotly contested by the world’s major aircraft producers, and a three-way final round ended in America’s favor with the planned purchase of the F-18 Super Hornet from Boeing. The Chicago-based aviation giant was the clear favorite of Brazil’s government, over the Rafale made by France’s Dassault (EPA:AM), which was former President Luiz Inácio da Silva’s choice, and the JAS-39 Gripen NG from Sweden’s Saab (STO:SAAB-B). A visit by Vice President Joe Biden to Brazil earlier this year was widely considered as having sealed the deal for Boeing.

But as news broke that the NSA had been monitoring not only the Brazilian government but also oil giant Petrobras (NYSE:PBR), rumors began swirling that Brasília might not want to pursue the deal. “You cannot give such a contract to a country that you do not trust,” Reuters quoted a source close to the jet fighter negotiations as saying.

That's right, what Bush did is still having an influence on what is going on today. President Obama is still trying to get this country back in good standing with the rest of the world because of what the Bush administration did.

NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned Empty Foreign Papers Get it right!

Ignore the ObamaBots:

The chief of the US spy agency NSA has not discussed the alleged bugging of German chancellor's phone with President Barack Obama, officials say.

Gen Keith Alexander never discussed alleged operations involving Chancellor Angela Merkel, an NSA spokeswoman said.

German media say the US has been tapping the chancellor's phone since 2002, and Mr Obama was told in 2010.

The row has led to the worst diplomatic crisis between the two countries in living memory.

A report in German tabloid Bild am Sonntag claimed that Gen Alexander had told the president about the bugging himself.

BBC News, Berlin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By all accounts, Angela Merkel has been genuinely shocked by the revelations. People close to her told the BBC she felt personally affronted. When Barack Obama was in Berlin in June, they did seem to get on well. She is not good at hiding her feelings, and the glum scowl she used to reserve for Silvio Berlusconi, for example, was replaced by a beam of warmth. They were tactile - he would put his arm round her back; she would clutch his elbow. Perhaps the sense of betrayal is all the greater because of her background in the East German communist regime where spying was pervasive. She might have expected it from the Stasi but not from her new best friend.

Others might feel betrayed, too. When the original allegations of widespread phone-tapping emerged, some of Chancellor Merkel's confidantes belittled the problem, saying the criticism of the US had a touch of anti-Americanism and that the surveillance was about terrorism.

These people are now some of the strongest critics of the US. They are also saying that German law has been broken. If the activities of American government employees were investigated by the German authorities, that would make the whole affair harder to damp down. It would be in the system of justice and pursuit would be relentless.

An NSA source told the paper that Obama had not stopped the operation, and had wanted to know all about Mrs Merkel as "he did not trust her".

The repub party of "NO" won't let him, everything depends what the House of Reps will let happen. The House is going to change and get rid of all the "NO" folks and then President Obama can get something done.

It is a commonplace myth that the Democrats controlled the congress for 2 years under President Obama. The Democrats don't control much of anything without 60 votes in the Senate, as the Republicans are trigger-happy with the filibuster. Al Franken's election in 2008 was contested by his opponent, so he wasn't sworn in until early July, 2009. Ted Kennedy died in late August of 2009, so up until that point the Democrats had 60 votes in the Senate for about 1 1/2 months. Kennedy's replacement (Kirk?) was appointed in late September, 2009 and served until Scott Brown was sworn in on Feb 4, 2010. Overall, the Democrats had 60 votes in the Senate for a total of about 5 months, not counting vacations, etc. and we all know that Congress has plenty of time off!!

NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned Empty Re: NSA spied on millions in France; U.S. ambassador summoned

While it is clear the left (as represented here) would prefer a one party system when they have the majority, but that is not how our government works.  We do not have a one party system and while it can be argued that the election and re-election of Obama was a mandate, can’t it also be argued the election of Republican and Tea Party members to the House was also a mandate?

Obama was elected… I can’t think of a reason why he was…but he was.

Conservative Republicans and Tea Party Members were elected in 2010 to stop Obama.  They were elected to say: NO.
While the left might hate the Republicans, they are doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

As for the Democrats taking back the house next year…Not a freakin chance.

It comes down to the individual elections and there is just no way it could happen.  There are very few swing districts up for grabs in 2014 and the Democrats will not mount a serious challenge to a clear majority of the Republicans running, let alone actually win.  Just like it is highly unlikely the Republicans taking the Senate, the individual races just are not in swing areas.

Of course this could change if 2014 becomes a Wave Election like 2010 triggered by a specific event.  The partial government shut-down would not be one but if Obamacare fails, well that would be a game changer.

It is no wonder Democrats want to change the narrative as it appears the Signature Legislation is floundering.
