Obama Marks Mandela's Death...
"...On Thursday, in the aftermath of South African iconic leader Nelson Mandela’s death at age 95, President Obama’s White House account gave a tribute to Mandela – a picture of Obama in Mandela’s prison cell, along with a quote from Obama about Mandela.
Even in paying tribute to a historic figure, President Obama couldn’t help but make it about him.

I didn't know much about him.
Mandela was an African nationalist, an ideological position he held since joining the ANC,[327] also being "a democrat, and a socialist".[328] Although he presented himself in an autocratic manner in several speeches, Mandela was a devout believer in democracy and would abide by majority decisions even when deeply disagreeing with them.[329] He held a conviction that "inclusivity, accountability and freedom of speech" were the fundamentals of democracy,[330] and was driven by a belief in natural and human rights.[331] This belief drove him to not only pursue racial equality but also to promote gay rights as part of the post-apartheid reforms.[332]
A democratic socialist, Mandela was "openly opposed to capitalism, private land-ownership and the power of big money".[333] Influenced by Marxism, during the revolution Mandela advocated scientific socialism,[334] although he denied being a communist during the Treason Trial.[335] Biographer David James Smith thought this untrue, stating that Mandela "embraced communism and communists" in the late 1950s and early 1960s, though was a "fellow traveller" rather than a party member.[336] In the 1955 Freedom Charter, which Mandela had helped create, it called for the nationalisation of banks, gold mines, and land, believing it necessary to ensure equal distribution of wealth.[337] Despite these beliefs, Mandela nationalised nothing during his presidency, fearing that this would scare away foreign investors. This decision was in part influenced by the fall of the socialist states in the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc during the early 1990s.[338]

NY Times … May 13. 1997
South Africa's governing party admitted today that it used torture, executions, and land mines during its fight against apartheid, opening a new chapter in this country's efforts to come to terms with its past.
Senior officials of the African National Congress also said they could have done far more to stop the gruesome practice in the black townships of ''necklacing'' people suspected of cooperating with the South African security forces. Such people were pinned inside a car tire, doused in gasoline, set on fire and left to die.
Party officials had long resisted appearing before the commission, saying their actions were excusable because they had been fighting a ''just war.'' Today's testimony before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission represented a major step toward holding the winners in the struggle against the white apartheid Government accountable for their share of atrocities.

It's been 20 years, but I'll never forget the time the BBC interviewed a black South African who stated,WHL wrote:A big deal was sure made about his dying, wasn't it?
"Things were better under Apartheid".

Remember "necklacing"?

(Placing a rubber tire around a victim's neck, and setting it on fire).

From Reagan's Diary...
The debate, which culminated in today’s vote, was not whether or not to oppose apartheid but, instead, how best to oppose it and how best to bring freedom to that troubled country.
I deeply regret that Congress has seen fit to override my veto of the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986. Punitive sanctions, I believe, are not the best course of action; they hurt the very people they are intended to help. My hope is that these punitive sanctions do not lead to more violence and more repression. Our administration will, nevertheless, implement the law. It must be recognized, however, that this will not solve the serious problems that plague that country. The United States must also move forward with positive measures to encourage peaceful change and advance the cause of democracy in South Africa.
Now is the time for South Africa’s Government to act with courage and good sense to avert a crisis. Moderate black leaders who are committed to democracy and oppose revolutionary violence are ready to work for peaceful change. They should not be kept waiting. It would be tragic to lose this opportunity to create a truly free society which respects the rights of the majority, the minority, and the individual. There is still time for orderly change and peaceful reform. South Africans of good will, black and white, should seize the moment.

HUFFINGTON POST. His support for Marxist revolutionary and former Cuban president Fidel Castro during the Cuban Revolution of the 1950s.
"Long live the Cuban Revolution. Long live comrade Fidel Castro ... Cuban internationalists have done so much for African independence, freedom, and justice. We admire the sacrifices of the Cuban people in maintaining their independence and sovereignty in the face of a vicious imperialist campaign designed to destroy the advances of the Cuban revolution. We too want to control our destiny ... There can be no surrender. It is a case of freedom or death. The Cuban revolution has been a source of inspiration to all freedom-loving people." -- Mandela during a speech at a Cuban rally on July 26, 1991.

Even more...
