You stink!

A new poll shows that Americans have a terribly dim view of their elected leaders and the overall effectiveness of the government.

Only one in 20 say it works well and needs no changes. Nearly two-thirds say the country is heading in the wrong direction.

And 70% of Americans lack confidence in the government’s ability to “make progress on the important problems and issues facing the country in 2014,” according to the poll conducted by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

The poll — revealed two months after partisan gridlock shut down the federal government for the first time in 17 years — shows that all the bickering has taken a heavy toll on public opinion.

A sampling of New Yorkers also gave the federal government a failing grade.

“I’m dissatisfied,” said Harry Rivers, 58, a supervisor for the city Housing Authority.

“They don’t seem to have the public’s best interests at heart,” said Rivers, who lives in Harlem. “They just seem to be more interested in the party than the public.”
