Fox News Poll: Voters say government is the problem, taxes are too high

A record number of American voters think they pay too much in taxes. In addition, they think government is more often the source of America’s troubles—not the means of fixing them.

The latest Fox News poll shows by a 67-18 percent margin, voters agree that the assessment by Ronald Reagan of the nation’s woes in 1981 applies today as well: That government is not the solution to our problems—government is the problem. The portion seeing government “as the problem” is up 14 points from 53 percent in 2008. Even 51 percent of Democrats describe the government as the problem.

It is interesting what is going on locally now too. It seems the selectmen don't think they work for us the people any more. They don't want to listen to what we citizens who elected them have to say. Locally, it started in Gilford a year or two ago, then in Alton, then the Belknap Commissioners and now it seems the people of Tuftonboro are saying their Selectmen don't want to listen. What is this, a dictatorship?

Obama was recently rated at about #18 of the 44 presidents, and he is clearly one of the best presidents this country has ever had. As far as local control you see a very small group of people who are not getting their way making a lot of noise. (mostly on the internet) Tuftonboro has one of the lowest tax rates in the state, so no one has any complaint about how the town has been run.

When you see a good guy like Jack Widmer resigning as treasurer of Carroll County you can bet something is wrong. Apparently the county delegation decided that they don't want to pay for the nursing home, which they voted for, so they have failed to insert the payments for the nursing home in the annual budget over the last couple of years. In the meantime they have drained the county surplus fund, hence there is no money to fund the nursing home this year. So, if the delegation (Umberger, Schmidt, Parker and others) doesn't make any attempt to fix this problem the county will have a serious default in this year's budget. I would be really upset if I had a family member in the nursing home, especially alzheimer's patients, because people may have to take their loved ones home to take care of them if the nursing home needs to be closed. It's really a shame that the Tea Party radicals, even on the local level, have become such petulant little fools!!

Yes, Tuftonboro taxes are still lower, but the current trend is upward. The voters voted against the new library. Apparently the selectmen don't want to allow time at the meetings for public input as in Alton and Gilford. This is also a seemingly new trend! Alton and Gilford both had citizens arrested. A little power with these selectmen seems to go a long way right to their heads!! It will be interesting to see what the new board does in Wolfeboro. Guess we are off topic here and should move to the Wolfeboro tiopic.

Do you know how the nursing home works? Is it like other nursing homes as far as how the people pay?

The Selectmen in Wolfeboro take verbal abuse from Josephine Amatucci at almost every public input session, and according to your moderator towns are not required to have public input at their BOS meetings. It's just a courtesy.

I would imagine that most of the nursing home operation is reimbursed by Medicaid, since most Americans can't afford $8 thousand a month. A real aggravating factor in all of this is the state dropping the Medicaid expansion under Obamacare, so money will even get tighter. I wouldn't be surprised if the nursing home and Huggins closes in a few years because of the irresponsible decisions our state legislators are making. The funding I was referencing in my previous post was for the debt service to build the facility. All of a sudden the county delegation decided they don't want to pay for it anymore, and that's why Widmer quit. God Bless America, as it heads toward third world status!!!

Our new Selectman, Luke, decided that we needed a town wide audit, department by department, and that's what he ran on. Never mind the audit we have done every year by a CPA. I would be happy to donate all of my previous budget books to Luke so he can get to work on that.

Yes, but I still say Josephine should have her five minutes. They can just ignore her like they always do. But they should allow her the 5 minutes. You are right, the selectmen don't have to allow 5 minutes for citizens to speak. They can send the subject about which they wish to speak to the secretary and then be able to speak, but is that really a free society? Shouldn't people be allowed to just show up and speak at a "public session"? After all, how many actually got to the selectmen's meetings in any town??? This bit about not allowing the public to speak once again reminds me that elected officials forget who hired them and who they work for. I am very excited about the new board in Wolfeboro, it is time we had some new blood. I am hoping for good things from them as I expect a lot of other people are.

In no way should any Board of Selectmen have to take verbal abuse from any citizen! If they did away with public input then a citizen could ask to be put on the agenda to speak at the meeting. This way the BOS could exclude abusive citizens. Why should any person making between $80 to $100 a week have to put up with that nonsense???

They ran for the job. It's part of it, listening to the citizens. Sarah ran again so apparently it didn't bother HER too much.

Well they are going to get it. I have news for you. ANYBODY who deals with the public deals with abuse at some time. If they can't stand the heat, they should get out of the fire.

Tuftonboro just did away with Public Input, except at public hearings. If you have a topic you want to discuss at a selectmen's meeting, contact them and get yourself on their agenda. You'll need to describe your topic of discussion. They also spelled out rules to prevent disruptive behavior at their meetings. Good for them!

Alton just did the same. Yes, good for them. More power to the powers. Rule over those little people!!!!
