Stores in Wolfeboro
Does anyone remember where Gene's Hardware started and moved to in Wolfeboro? Our thoughts are it was where Hallmark is today and moved to behind Spencer Hughes after. Any ideas?

That sounds right. As I recall, Genes didn't last too much longer after that move off of N. Main Street.

For some reason I think the same.

Re: Stores in Wolfeboro
I was always faithful to Genes Hardware—and went there first.
If I'd had a car back then, I might have gone first to Wolfeboro Hardware—instead.

So where was Gene's when you went there?

OK. I was pretty sure it was there. Funny how you forget for sure though.

Genes
Actually Genes was originally where Maxfields Real Est. The Bldg burned in the mid 50's and Genes moved to the now Hallmark Bldg.
where it remained until closing.

Thanks for that WHV! That's the way I remembered it too, but am glad to hear from someone else. Do you remember Mulvey's and Corkum's and Brown's shoe store and the Dorothy Ann Store? Before Gene's moved into where Hallmark is now there was a store that sold food. It is right on the tip of my tongue (the name) but I can't think of it. Can you remember?

That was before my time: I was a kid, and not interested in food.

Oops...I do remember Brown's Shoe Store: their daughter still lives in New England.

If Mulvey's and Corkum's were hardware stores, I'd remember them.

They were both men's stores. And Mulvey's was there maybe in the 70s before it became the men's Elk Shop. Joyce Brown, as I remember was extremely smart. I loved the squeaky floors in that store. I loved getting our new shoes there.

Cliff Stockbridge ran the store where Hallmarks is now. We went there for 5 cent ice cream cones
It was like a convenience store. Not sure they sold beer though. Cliff later became Highway Supt. for the Town.
Browns Shoe also sold clothes, Depending on what he ordered a lot of citizens in town bought what he sold. Green caps were
popular with ear flaps. Geenos sp.... were popular along with Green sweat shirts. Never any lettering on tees of sweats.Light green
rubber boots were popular. It was the most reasonable price in town.. No one went out of town to shop. too far.
I guess Harold liked green. We just shopped there. Tobeys Pharmacy where I bought my lst camera, a Brownie with Flash.
Wolfeboro Hardware where I saved my earned money to buy an English bike for $60 that was a lot of money. It kind of fell apart.
Joyce was smart, so was her Brother Charlie, who was a Prof. at Plymouth State.
