CONCORD, N.H. —Some privately-run campgrounds in New Hampshire's White Mountains National Forest will be forced to close ahead of the lucrative Columbus Day weekend because of the federal government shutdown, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The closure of the 21 campgrounds and hundreds of camping sites comes at a particularly bad time: Early October is peak season for leaf-peeping, and the long weekend is the third best for tourism in the state, behind the Fourth of July and Labor Day, according to New Hampshire tourism officials. Last year, some 600,000 people visited over the weekend, pumping nearly $90 million into the economy.

New Hampshire should take a page from Wisconsin's Governor Scott Walker, who's keeping all of Wisconsin's parks open.

Governor Hassan is "playing along" with this Administration.

However, I'd say, I'd vote for Democrat Harry Truman (if I could).

The Republicans aren't perfect either. But they are better than the Dems. And the tea party is great.

Federal officials have closed a number of popular tourist attractions in Washington, citing the government shutdown, but they've left lesser-known locations un-barricaded, as evidenced by an interactive map compiled by House Republicans.

"It appears as though only the highly visible monuments and areas are being closed to the public — further proof that the Obama Administration is only playing politics and purposely choosing to make this shut down as painful as possible," House Natural Resources Committee chairman Doc Hastings, R-Wash., said.

Hastings' committee staff compiled photos of high-profile, open-air sites closed by the National Park Service, including: the Georgetown Waterfront; the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial; the Sculpture Garden; parts of the National Mall; and the Lincoln Memorial.

The closure of the World War II Memorial received national attention Tuesday after aging World War II veterans, aided by members of Congress and their staff, moved the barricades to visit the monument.

On the other hand, Hastings' team noted that the Constitution Gardens, the Upper Senate Park, and the Japanese-Americans Memorial, among others, remain open.

National Review's Jim Geraghty tweeted a photo of "the District of Columbia War Memorial: apparently not important enough to shut down."

“The Obama Administration is not only taking the unnecessary and egregious step of closing off open spaces and monuments — places without doors and gates that are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — but is selectively choosing where to apply this policy," Hastings said.

President Obama has visited the Navy-run presidential retreat Camp David in central Maryland only 32 times, but it is being kept open during the government shutdown for his entertainment and security at the same time the Pentagon is cutting sports coverage to hundreds of thousands of troops around the world.

A phone call to the retreat found it open, confirming a TMZ report.

Camp David is one of the most highly secure areas in the nation and provides the president with a safe haven. The president has been known to shoot skeet at Camp David, which he most recently used for his 52nd birthday, according to CBS White House Correspondent Mark Knoller.

Obama has spent just 78 days at the retreat, choosing instead to spend his weekends in Washington and hitting military golf courses, which are also being kept open during the government shutdown.

In the meantime, overseas troops who typically look forward to watching NFL games and the baseball playoffs provided by the American Forces Network, will get little if any service due to the shutdown. A notice on the AFN page reads:

“GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN. Due to the government shutdown, the Defense Department can only provide limited overseas television, radio, print and web services.”

The virtual elimination of sports coverage was noticed by the New England Sports Network, co-owned by the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins. “AFN provides a form of escape for many troops stationed around the world. Let's hope the popular station gets back on the air soon,” they reported.

I think the first thing we should have closed is Camp David.

Rep. Carol Shea Porter said the New Hampshire delegation is unanimous in its opposition to the shutdown.

“The entire New Hampshire delegation is against the government shutdown,” she said. “The shutdown is hurting families and small businesses in New Hampshire and it needs to stop. House leaders must allow a vote on a bipartisan bill to reopen government on behalf of all Americans."

Rep. Ann Kuster urged House Speaker John Boehner to schedule a vote right away to end the shutdown.

"I am extremely frustrated that gridlock in Washington could end up hurting our economy and impacting fall tourism in the beautiful White Mountains and across the Granite State, particularly during peak season for visitors,” Kuster said.

Hassan is not sticking up for the state she is supposed to represent. If she was she wouldn't be letting New Hampshire get hurt by this Democrat shutdown of our government.

I am happy it is shut down. But why are we still going to pay the employees who aren't working? They might as well work if we are going to pay them anyway. What is the point???? I thought the point of a shutdown is because they won't finance the government. None of it makes sense.

The shutdowns are highly selective.

Where the National-Socialist Party needs support, they'll harm those states with significant Republican Party presence.

 

That Federal employees would continue to get paid was never in question.

Government shutdown forces Lake Mead residents out of their homes

Joyce Spencer, 77, and her husband, Ralph, 80, were given 24 hours to vacate their home on Thursday.

“I had to go to town today and buy Ralph undershirts and jeans because I forgot his pants,” Mrs. Spencer told KTNV.

The couple has been living in the family ice cream store, and they’re not allowed home until the government reopens, the station said.

“I had to be sure and get his walker and his scooter that he has to go in,” Mrs. Spencer said. “We’re not hurt in any way except it might cost me if I have to go buy more pants.”
